Ways to stay in shape during the cold weather season

Individuals tend to avoid going outside and frequently miss the gym when there’s a chill in the air. But don’t let cold weather outplay your wish to stay in shape this winter. Instead, arm yourself with some strategies. While everybody is scrambling to stick to their New Year’s resolutions, you’ll be coasting along, questioning why everybody is emphasizing about warmer weather and shorts season.

Here are some simple health strategies by Excel Dental Studio to get you through the winter months:

·        Walking and Stair Climbing: If you need a low-impact workout but don't want to go for a treadmill, look for other resources like shopping malls or tall buildings. Many shopping malls open early and let walkers in. If you reside in a building with lots of stairs, consider climbing stairs for 20 minutes or more instead of taking a lift. This strenuous exercise will pump up your cardiovascular capability and give you strong legs without affecting your joints.

·        Trampolines and Jumping Rope: Most of us have loving memories of jumping rope as a child, and it's still a fun, cheap method to burn calories while increasing your agility, steadiness, and strength. Jumping on the trampoline also burns calories and will make you feel like a child again. These practices have a greater impact on your joints, so consider your knee and ankle strength before beginning with a jumping routine.

·        Dance Classes: Whether it's jazz, hip-hop or ballroom dancing, you will burn calories, strengthen your sense of balance and learn a skill that you can use at your next get-together. Ask your local dance studio for its group class program to get your score on.

·         Indoor Athletic Leagues: If you are already active and in abstemiously good shape then hunt for tennis, volleyball, or basketball leagues in your area. Sporting leagues keep you in shape and wake up your approachable, competitive spirit. There's typically a small fee to cover the costs.

·        Workout DVDs: Following a workout DVD is another method to exercise while stuck inside due to a cold climate. There are several DVDs to select from body shaping for your legs, hips, and abs, to yoga and for your balance and flexibility. Choose from several DVDs and rotate them to prevent monotony.

These are some of the options you have, so choose one and enjoy this season! Our Merrillville Dentist wish you excellent winter months!!

Be thankful for your lovely teeth this Thanksgiving

It’s less than a week for the Thanksgiving! A time to be thankful and enjoy a great meal on the big day with your beloved ones at Merrillville. Before you start to munch on your favorite dishes remember to keep your teeth safe from decay and take proper care of them. On a special thanksgiving meal, you have the most mouth-watering and delicious dishes placed just in front of you. From the classic sides like buttery mashed potatoes and green bean casserole to pumpkin pie, these dishes could leave a lot of chances to make you visit a Merrillville dentist soon if you don’t take dental care.

Here are a few tips that could prove to be helpful for you to care of your lovely smile:

1.      Maintain Balance in your food: Watch over the food you eat as a lot of these food items contain high amounts of sugar and carbohydrates which are not good for the teeth. Consider eating items loaded with proteins instead as protein contains phosphorous which is a vital component in improving the strength of your teeth and jaw.

2.      Keep away from sticky stuff: Sticky stuff such as toffee puddings and sausages topped with fried onions should be mostly avoided or eaten in a lesser amount. Such stuff sticks to the teeth and it is often difficult to get rid of those sticky parts. The best you can do is to rinse your mouth after you’re done with the meal.

3.      Brush your teeth: DO NOT skip brushing your teeth after the thanksgiving meal. While brushing is vital after every meal it is more important after a thanksgiving meal. If it’s not possible to brush after the meal, at the most rinse your mouth to remove all the acid and leftover food.

4.       Avoid eating all day: As there are already a lot of delicious and mouth-watering dishes you cannot resist the temptation to keep hogging all day. Since you have a big meal to eat avoid eating stuff at the other time of the day which could only increase the take-in of sugar and carbohydrates.

This thanksgiving promise yourself a happy smile and have fun without worrying about your next visit to the dentist!

Happy Thanksgiving from Excel dental studio, Merrillville!

Football season is around the corner folks and Coach Brad Seiss led the first practice on Monday at Merrillville High school. This is first season for the Merrillville Football coach. Go Pirates!

Brad Seiss blew his whistle as Merrillville's football team completed a drill.
"Nice punt," Seiss said.
The next play started prematurely.
"Whoa," Seiss said. "Can't snap until he says, 'Set.'"
The Pirates were more than ready to go for the first practice of the fall on Monday at Merrillville High School. Even the mistakes were made out of eagerness.
Monday also marked the next chapter in Seiss' coaching career. He is in his first season at Merrillville.
"The kids have done a good job," Seiss said. "As long as all the paperwork is in and the administrative end is taken care of on the first day, that's your No. 1 goal you want to accomplish.
Seiss spent three seasons at Muncie Central, where he went 13-17. He takes over for Zac Wells, who is now the defensive coordinator at 2014 Illinois Class 8A state runner-up Homewood-Flossmoor.
"The best part of the first day is knowing you're going to have multiple days in a row," Seiss said. "In the summer, you want the kids to still have a summer. You have a few days off here and there. And then you get your moratorium weeks.
"Just the fact that we're going to have these guys for, hopefully through November, is what the goal is. School is getting ready to start and there is excitement with the first game coming up.
"One thing that's really good is that we established a good foundation here. That's been in place for a really long time."
Merrillville announced Seiss' hiring in April. He played college football at Ball State.
"I really like him," said senior defensive tackle Shawn Streck. "He's a good guy. He runs his practice similar to coach Wells, which is the way I like to run practice.
"… Everybody is buying in and believing that we can do something special in his first year and our last year."
Seiss said the first few practices go beyond fine-tuning plays.
"One thing that I really preach to our guys is that this is the seniors' team," he said. "They have to be leaders and they have to be guys that really lead everybody that is younger than them.
"Establishing how things are going to be, who the leaders are and figuring out the guys you can count on, that's the big part of the first few days."
The seniors have embraced the message.
"Just make sure we go hard every play so the young guys can see what they need to be like," senior running back Isaiah Thornton said. "Don't goof around. You don't have time for that. Make sure you lead by example."
That attitude has helped the transition.
"The thing I'm most impressed with is the kids have a great worth ethic," Seiss said. "They are eager to learn, eager to play football. They want to be good. And that's great. As a coach, when you have guys that want to do what it takes to be successful, that's always a good thing. And that's a big thanks to coach Wells, all the assistant coaches, everybody that's been here before. We have a lot of good things in place.
"The kids want to be good and expect to be good."
